5 crucial Highland Cow facts that you probably didn’t know!

To mark the creation of Fergus, Strachan and Stuart, the metal Highland Cows by artist S Burke McKay, here is a list of 5 facts you probably didn’t know about Highland cows.

Highland Cow Facts:

Instead of being called a Herd, a group of Highland Cattle is called a Fold.

They are the oldest recorded breed of cattle in the world and their existence was first recorded in the 6th century AD.

Their hair, although an advantage in their native Scotland, can be troublesome for Highland cattle bred in other countries. Warmer climates can be stressful for the cattle, since their heavy coat will cause overheating.

A Highland cow pregnancy typically lasts just over nine and a half months!

Highland Cattle, despite the harsh Scottish environment, tend to live much longer than other breeds of cows. A typical lifespan is 20 years.
